Textile
wall hangings of different forms had been paperhanging’s precursors; therefore
it is not surprising that the first and most consistent influence on background
design has come from fabrics. The trade card from the 1770 of john Sigrist
offers to create newspapers to match fabrics, but in backgrounds was designed
to imitate the fashions, textures and patterns of fabrics to represent wall
coverings. In Holinshed's Chronicle, Sir William Harrison's Description of
England comes with a report on the types of wall coverings in use: The walls of
our homes on the sides in kind be hanged with tapestry, arras painted or work
fabrics.

the nations made far closer and warm. - In consequence, backgrounds were
designed to look as the substances they substituted. What's regarded as the
earliest wallpaper in England has a pomegranate design derived from a
contemporary velvet or damask, and was discovered in the Master's Lodge in
Christ's College, Cambridge. Even though traditionally dated to about 1509,
it's more probable late sixteenth century. The earliest wallpapers are
explained as being after the fashion of Tapestry': in the eighteenth century

These decorations, with their landscape topics, hunting scenes and so forth,
had been the forerunners of the panoramic newspapers which appeared around 1800.
Tapestries themselves had been already being imitated by painted fabric
hangings, and these had been at turn imitated by printed sheets for wall
decoration. All these surviving drawings are pictorial: a stag hunt, a home and
also garden with a robed figure, a female in a garden beside a fountain, and
also a seated woman fishing inside a pond, with a home beyond. The newspapers
have been discovered in various places - in that the drawer of a chest, lining
a deed box at Clandon Park, and in Colonial Williamsburg, just one example has
been discovered in use as a background - that the Stag Hunt design in a first
floor living area in The Shrubbery, Epsom.
The
1738 edition of Chambers Cyclopaedia of Arts Sciences doesn't have entry for
paperhanging’s, but includes that the following comment under Tapestry': Some
use Tapestry as a general name for all sorts of hangings whether woven or
worked with the needle, and if silken, woollen, linen, leathern, or of paper .
- Other fabric wall hangings comprised embroideries, chintzes, silks, cut
velvet and damask.
